About The Brand
Farmina is an Italian brand. Their story starts with the owners deep Italian roots and how family and food are at the core of their being. In their culture, they believe in taking everything they can from the land and doing it least destructive way possible.
In 1965, Francesco Russo founded the Russo Mangimi Company that specialized in animal nutrition. In 1999, his son Dr. Angelo Russo found a clear business plan and shifted towards the pet food industry with a different angle. Their goal was to create pet foods based on science and the natural composition of the animal.
At this time the company was still operating independently, but then it joined forces with an English company known as Farmina. The response from customers was excellent, and the brand was able to partner with the chair of animal nutrition at the University of Naples.
Shortly after, Dr. Russo developed Farmina Veterinary Research, which is a team of veterinarians and animal nutritionists geared to develop long-term feeding solutions for the unique needs of every pet worldwide.
Its formulation team is made up of an impressive array of experts and professionals in the field, including a Veterinarian with both a PhD and masters degree in Animal Nutrition, 6 members with a masters degree in Animal Feed Technology, 3 members with a Bachelors degree in Food Technology, and 5 additional vets (one with a specialized nutrition focus).
In addition to the formulation team, many other veterinarians also occupy managerial positions within the company and 80 more contribute to international field support to make sure that each and every one of its products provide the safest and most bioavailable nutrition for your beloved pets.

Farmina Dog Food Review
1. ND Lamb & Ancestral Mini Breed
First 5 ingredients: Lamb, Dehydrated Lamb, Whole Spelt, Whole Oats, Dried Whole Eggs
Rating: 4.75/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Comes in smaller kibbles, this is ideal for mini and small breeds. And since it is a low glycemic formula, it is ideal for diabetic dogs or those who need food that will not increase blood sugar. .
Key features:
- Limited carbohydrate content
- Pea-free
- Low glycemic and low in fiber
- Gluten-free
Unlike other brands that use plant oil as the main source of fat, Farmina uses fat taken from animal sources always. In this case, its herring oil, which is a naturally rich source of EPA, DHA, and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
This is a primarily lamb meat recipe that we were excited to try for our testers whose wee pups had taste buds dedicated to red meat. It does have dried eggs in it so we cant say that its a poultry-free formulation. But for our batch of tester dogs who werent sensitive to chicken, this was an excellent opportunity to see how good this dog food actually is.
After feeding this to our volunteer small breed pups for several weeks, the verdict came out. Its an excellent recipe to feed dogs.
Our testers, who were also label checkers, were quite happy with the list of ingredients already. But the changes we and theyve seen in their pups are what has them (and us!) convinced.
Several have reported changes in their pets stools, which are now denser than before. For one owner whose senior pup previously had somewhat loose stools, this was a big and welcome change.
Dogs were noted to gobble up their meals quickly. Only one young adult pup was unconvinced about the food, but her brother was the opposite, according to the owner. In fact, a bit of portion control had to be put in place because the male pup ate a little too much and was showing a bit of added poundage.
The scent of the food also received a thumbs up from pet parents and us too. The dog food actually smells nice, instead of the usual strong-smelling food we can usually expect from commercial foods.
Pros
- Taste-approved by most of our tester dogs
- Smells good, unlike other dog foods
- Firms up stools
Cons
- Does not come in a resealable bag
2. N&D Chicken & Ancestral Mini Breed
First 5 ingredients: Boneless Chicken, Dehydrated Chicken, Whole Spelt, Whole Oats, Chicken Fat
Rating: 5/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
This low fiber, high protein and limited carbohydrate chicken kibble is suited for all life stage, mini or small breed dogs.
Key features:
- Limited carbohydrate
- Low fiber
- Low glycemic
- 92% of the protein comes from animal sources
Weve heard a lot of good things about the brand, and this grain-inclusive diet is one that we wanted to try. Its touted as a low fiber diet, which is ideal for most pups with healthy digestion and no gastro issues. It is GMO free, comprised of 60% animal ingredients, and the calcium and phosphorous levels are controlled.
We decided to call on our team of volunteer dog owners and researchers to test this food out. This recipe was fed to several small breed pups for weeks. And what we found out is that it was a unanimous yes from all of- our testers.
The little pups love the taste. This was true for all of the dogs on this diet. We even had one picky pup in our team, and this pooch gobbled everything in her dish downno problemwhich her owner did not expect.
As far as tummy issues go, none of the pups experienced any upsets. The formula is packed with lots of good stuff, and none that are considered as common triggers for allergies, such as fillers, artificial preservatives, legumes, or lentils.
The pups activity levels were looked at too, and many were reported to be more energetic than before. Some dogs, meanwhile, have been observed to have shinier hair that shed less.
No one reported any down side to the dog food, but we did get some feedback that the cost was a little prohibitive for such a small bag.
Pros
- Was a hit with all, even finicky pups
- Pups had more energy than before
- Coats and hair were noticeably shinier
- Pet parents like the formulation
Cons
- Costlier than many other food brands, because it is an imported product
3. N&D Ancestral Grain Lamb & Blueberry
First 5 ingredients: Boneless Lamb, Dehydrated Lamb, Whole Spelt, Whole Oats Dried Whole Eggs
Rating: 4.75/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Made with real lamb and 90% of its protein content comes from high-quality animal sources. The rest of ingredients include organic spelt, oats, fruits, veggies, minerals and vitamins.
Key Features:
- No wheat, soy, gluten, peas, or lentils
- Non-GMO ingredients
- 90% of the total protein comes from animal sources
Their Medium & Maxi recipes are designed as a complete meal for adult dogs of medium to larger breed sizes. Like many of their recipes, it is low glycemic to make sure your dog does not experience a blood spike after each meal. It also features limited carbohydrates to make for a low fiber diet.
We had a batch of testers with medium to big-sized dogs test this product out for weeks and get their feedback. The label looked good to us, and we figured it is a safe and healthy product to try out on pets.
One of the common things we and our testers liked about the dog food is the smell. It doesnt smell like your usual dog food but rather with a hint of blueberries. Strangely enough, dogs who are highly sensitive to meat scents did not seem turned off by this.
The second change that we observed were the coats and furs of the pups. These felt softer to the touch and looked overall healthier. Its fun to run fingers through the fur as they feel silkier now.
Lastly, poops in most dogs have been reported as being a little smaller than they were previously on a different dog food diet. This may have something to do with the high digestibility of the food where most ingredients are absorbed and not wasted.
Two dog owners, however, found out that their pups needed something with a little more fiber. As this dog food is touted as being low in fiber, it was just not the right fit for them.
Pros
- Smells nice
- Dogs furs feel silkier
- Stools are smaller
Cons
- Not for dogs who need high fiber diets
4. N&D Ancestral Grain Chicken & Pomegranate Medium & Maxi
First 5 ingredients: Chicken, Dehydrated Chicken, Whole Spelt, Whole Oats, Chicken Fat
Rating: 4.75/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
A kibble that is specifically made for medium and large breed dogs. This product is brimming with omega fatty acids which keeps the coat and skin healthy and vibrant.
Key Features:
- Non-GMO
- Food vitamins are added post cooking to help retain their freshness
- Contains pomegranates and berries for their rich antioxidant content
- No by-products, meals, legumes, or peas
If youre a dog food snob, then this recipe or this brand might be the one for you. This Chicken Pomegranate Medium & Maxi formulation does not only sound unique, its loaded with all the good stuff dog foods should have: highly digestible grains, premium animal proteins, naturally-sourced antioxidants, and animal-based fats.
We asked the same batch of testers that tried the Lamb & Blueberry Medium & Maxi diet to try this recipe out too. If the dogs thrived on this one as they did on the lamb recipe, at the very least it will be a nice addition to their regular dog food rotation.
After several weeks on this diet, many owners said that the recipe was just as good as the lamb one. Many dogs liked the taste, although some have shown a definite preference for one flavor over the other. Either way, the food was well-received by our furry testers.
Just like with the blueberry recipe, this chicken & pomegranate one also smells great. It doesnt stink like other commercial dog foods, yet it is highly attractive to canines. Weve witnessed dogs gobbling it down, so we can definitely say it is a winner in the doggy world.
The dog food is also excellent for fur, skin and coat. Coats look thicker and shinier and they feel so much softer. As for doggy waste, they are more compact and drier. They arent wet or sticky, and are easier to pick up and clean up after.
The only downside to this product is that it is more expensive than your average kibble. Many of our fur-rents have decided that the switchand extra expensewas worth it to see their dogs looking much better overall. However, some on a tight budget will continue to look for a cheaper alternative.
Pros
- Results in drier and denser poops
- Has a nice scent
- Tasty for many canines
- Keeps fur feeling soft
Cons
- Cost may be prohibitive to some
5. N&D Ancestral Grains Cod and Orange
First 5 Ingredients: Wild Caught Cod, Dehydrated Cod, Herring, Whole Spelt, Whole Oats
Rating: 5/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Made from fresh cod, this fishy formula is a welcome new taste for your pup especially for picky eaters.
Key Features:
- High in protein
- Single animal protein source
- Non-GMO
Among our pool of canine volunteers are dogs who have animal protein sensitivities. For dogs with food sensitivities, its always best to go with a recipe that uses a single animal protein source to avoid triggering allergies or digestive problems.
This dry dog foodsticks to cod as its only animal protein source. Its designed for pups who cannot handle poultry or other animal meats. The fat source (non-protein) comes from fish too and is supplied by herring oil.
Since its also low glycemic and low carbohydrate, we included chunky dogs (who should not be eating too many carbohydrates) with our batch of testers.
We observed a definite and welcome change in the pooches after feeding them this dog food for weeks. The change for most did not come fast, but there was a steady improvement in the skins and fur of these pups. However, the itchy skin that some of these pups suffered from went away almost immediately, which has led us to believe that for some dogs, it really is the food that is the problem or the cure.
So far, none of our pups experienced any upset tummies with their new diet. The dogs have shown tremendous excitement with the food, and mealtimes are now happy affairs. Because the issue with sensitivity has been taken care of, we noticed that the dogs were displaying more energy and zest.
As for our chunky pups, it has been slow going but with the added energy that they now have, they have been noticeably extra active, which in turn has helped them shed a little weight. A steady diet of this food over the course of the next several weeks should help them achieve their suitable weight.
Pros
- Pups are more energetic
- Itching has stopped
- Better skin and coats
6. N&D Mini Breed Wild Herring
First 5 Ingredients: Herring, Dehydrated Herring, Potato, Herring and Salmon Oil Blend, Dehydrated Egg Product
Rating: 4.5/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Specifically crafted for small dogs, this showcases a smaller kibble size. This has a low glycemic index and is protein rich, it caters to the unique needs of smaller dogs.
Key Features:
- 70% of the formula is made from animal ingredients
- 98% of the total protein is from an animal source
- Controlled levels of calcium and phosphorus
Dogs that need high amounts of protein to sustain extended activities or just a very playful nature will have their needs met by this formula. It has one of the highest protein content among the brands formulations at 34%.
The recipe is also 70% composed of animal ingredients, while the rest is made up of produce, vitamins, and minerals.
Weve asked some of our testers for the mini formulas to try this grain-free alternative, and keep it in their dogs food rotation if they liked it or thrived on it. So far, most of the pups we observed were happy about the taste.
The food has a strong fishy scent that the human parents did not like, but for dogs, it was highly tempting. The scent does not translate to dog waste, however. Stools are firmer with very little scent, which tipped the scales to in favor for most our testers humans.
There are some unique ingredients in the label that our eagle-eyed pet parents spotted and which warranted some explanation. These are the aloe vera and the green tea. The brand has kindly explained that the aloe vera improves joint health and is great for inflamed skin, while the green tea is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols.
The explanation about the aloe vera and green tea must be true as our pooches coats have grown noticeably shinier and thicker. Some pups who have sensitivities showed vast improvement in skin health and no itching.
Pros
- Dog poops have little scent and are firmer
- Good for inflamed and itchy skin
- High protein content
Cons
- The herring has a strong scent
7. N&D Ocean Trout & Salmon
First 5 ingredients: Trout, Salmon, Cod, Herring, Sweet Potatoes
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
This is a highly palatable grain-free wet food for adult dogs. Processed without adding any water or broth, this trout and salmon recipe is packed with protein and meaty flavors.
Key Features:
- No thickeners
- 100% BPA-free
- No poultry or by-products
Of course, our review wouldnt be complete if we didnt try out a canned dog food recipe too. Were very particular about the dog foods that we personally review and give to our testers to try, and the brands promise that this wet food does not contain thickeners (guar gum, carrageenan, xanthan gum, and others) caught our attention.
Its very rare for canned dog food to not rely on thickeners so we were excited to give this to our own pups (as a treat) and our testers as part of their dogs regular meals.
Our own feedback is this: Our dogs loved the food! And we loved the healthy formulation. Its packed with fish and no fillers, thickeners, or legume ingredients. Since our pups are already on a different diet, we decided to give this as a healthy snack when theyre feeling extra peckish. Oh, and because the flavor is fish, our cats decided they would like some too.
As for our testers, many of the dogs decided they loved fish when given this meal. Since several of them have allergies to other meat proteins, this fish formula was the perfect thing for their food sensitivities.
Their dogs tummies tolerate the food well, and for some, the itching that their pups usually had to deal with were gone. A few of our testers also noticed that the food has helped turn their pets formally dull coat to a healthy looking one.
One tester mentioned that the wet food looked a little soupy, but considering the lack of thickener in the food, this is understandable.
Pros
- Great for dogs with allergies
- Gentle on the tummy
- Makes coats look healthier and shinier
8. N&D Grain-Free Boar and Apple
First 5 ingredients: Boar, Dehydrated Boar, Sweet Potatoes, Deboned Chicken, Dehydrated Chicken
Rating: 4.75/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Made from real, wild boar and chicken as its main protein sources this is a truly appetizing meal for any dog. It also contains antioxidant rich fruits and veggies like: apples, pomegranate, orange, spinach, blueberry and carrots.
Key Features:
- High protein content
- 98% of the total protein is from animal sources
- Low carbohydrate diet
A unique novel protein, wild boar is the main ingredient in this dry dog food recipe. The protein content is quite high at 34% and 98% of the total protein content is supplied by animal meat. This sounded quite good to us so we assembled a volunteer team of adult pups who had high energy requirements.
Needless to say, our testers and their pups adored this recipe. Pet parents loved the formulation, the smell, and how the dog food has made a difference in their pups overall health. Dogs just love the taste.
In our observation, we noticed that transitioning to the new diet was relatively painless. The dogs quickly took to the food with no digestive upsets at all. Since the food is quite high on protein, there was also a very noticeable change in the dogs activities. More of them became a little more playful and could go longer on walks.
A couple of our testers also mentioned that since the food was nutritionally dense, they found that they could feed their dogs less. An improvement was also observed in the waste of these dogs. Feces generally have less odor and are easier to clean up because these are dry and smaller.
One tester, whose other pup (not included in the testing pool for this recipe) is allergic to poultry did express disappointment that the food contained chicken. According to her, it would have been more suitable for a recipe using a novel protein as the main ingredient to not include other proteins in the formulation.
Pros
- Able to sustain high level or longer duration of activities
- Easy to transition to
- Less food to feed as the kibble is nutritionally dense
9. N&D Prime Lamb & Blueberry Canned
First 5 ingredients: Lamb, Herring, Sweet Potatoes, Eggs, Herring Oil
Rating: 5/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
This tasty and aromatic wet food is made from lamb and herring in 100% BPA free cans. You can serve this as a stand alone meal or as a delectable topper on their favorite kibble.
Key Features:
- No added broth or water
- Is not formulated with thickeners
- Raw ingredients are gently steamed to preserve nutrients
Like with their other canned recipes, this one does not come with thickeners too. It doesnt make for a thick sauce but you can be sure that there are no unnecessary ingredients in what your dog eats. There is, however, a hearty texture since there is no added moisture.
We have previously given our pups the Ocean Trout & Salmon recipe and they loved it, so we tried this recipe too as part of their rotational treats. (Our dogs already have a regular food that works so well for them.) We also gave this food to our volunteers pups to test.
So the verdict: We cant say enough good things about this food. While many of my pups preferred the fish recipe over this lamb one, they still would not hesitate to gobble this up when given. While the ocean trout is their favorite, this is a close second.
It does not have a single animal protein formulation, but the ingredients are limited nonetheless. I dont have to worry about giving my dogs unhealthy snacks that would make them gain weight. The carb content is limited here so the probability of weight gain is low. (I do limit their snacking too.)
Our testers were also happy with the results. It worked great on pups with allergies, and the low-glycemic/low carb makeup has made it suitable for chunky doggos who were struggling with weight loss.
Many of our testers have said that they would gladly keep their dogs on the diet if expense was not an issue. For owners of big dogs, the price is a little daunting.
Pros
- Ideal for chunky pups who need to lose weight
- Suitable for dogs with allergies
- Limited ingredient diet
Cons
- Expensive when feeding big dogs
10. N&D Prime Chicken & Pomegranate Canned
First 5 ingredients: Chicken, Herring, Sweet Potatoes, Eggs, Herring Oil
Rating: 4.5/5
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Farmina steams their canned products individually to keep its flavor and nutrients intact. Inside this can is fresh, raw chicken and pomegranate, this doesn't contain any water making its texture more hearty.
Key Features:
- No thickeners
- Processed without added moisture (broth or water)
- Contains L-carnitine
We love how this brand of food is able to incorporate unusual ingredients into its dog food products and still manage to make the products tasty for dogs. The pomegranate in this canned dog food is supposed to provide naturally-sourced antioxidants and it makes up a big part of the recipe.
As part of our research, feedbacks from actual users are important. We want to get as comprehensive a detail as possible from consumers of the product, which is why we use our own pool of testers for the products we review.
The reviews for this food are overall positive. Our testers are happy about the premium formulation of the recipe as well as how its a game changer for their dogs who can be quite picky.
In our experience, healthy food can sometimes taste bland for dogs, while the unhealthy ones get eaten quickly. However, for this recipe and many others by them, its both highly palatable and highly nutritional.
Theres nothing bad that we can see in the formulation, and we looked hard. There are no chemicals, no fillers, and nothing that shouldnt be in there. It smells like people food too, which is an added bonus.
As far as taste goes, dogs cant have enough of it. Some of our testers used it as an entire meal for their pups, but for others who felt it was too pricey, the wet food served as toppers.
Pros
- Good for finicky pups
- Healthy formulation
- Suitable for weight maintenance or loss
All About Farmina Company
Where is The Brand Made?
Farmina Pet nutritional solutions are manufactured in Italy and then exported to over 60 countries. All formulations are made in house and are developed according to FEDIAF and AAFCO guidelines.
Where Does Farmina Source Its Ingredients?
Farmina sources its fresh and dehydrated chicken ingredients from Italian farms and growers, and these are slaughtered only a few hours from Farminas plants to ensure freshness.
Boar is harvested in Tuscany and Umbria, while fish are mostly sourced from Scandinavia. Due to a lack of availability in Italy, some other ingredients like herring and whole dehydrated eggs are sourced from other European Countries like Denmark and France.
How Expensive Is The Brand?
This pet food company is in the upper category when it comes to price range. The price is due in most part to the premium ingredients and healthy formulation.
The brand does not cut corners when it comes to animal health, and every inclusion and ratio of nutrients has been thoroughly studied (some for years!) before the whole thing is crafted into food for your pet.
Another reason for the price is due to the product being imported. The brand is made in Italy and shipped here in the US. The pandemic has also been another factor in the rise of product cost.
Recall History
Currently, there are no recalls listed for the Farmina Pet Food brand.

For example, Farmina has a brand that is uniquely designed to help dogs that have been neutered to lose weight, but they also have another weight loss formula. Weve reviewed many dog food brands and have never seen anything like this.
That said, Farmina does have foods that help with more common medical concerns like renal, cardiac, and joints. The brand also has a prescription food called convalescence, which helps your dog gets the proper nutrients he needs while he recovers from an illness.
These products are available on Chewy, Amazon and the Farmina website.

What do consumers say?
We talked about the company; we talked about the food, now lets talk about what the people think about Farmina. The best way to get an inside scoop on a company is to see what actual users of the product are saying at scale. Here are some of the most common reviews of Farmina Dog Food.
Positive
Taste is great
My two dogs are somewhat picky eaters. They have been scratching lately, so I am trying this food. I was worried they would not like it, but I was wrong. They can smell it when I am putting it in their bowls, and start nudging me. They love it. I will let you know about the scratching in a couple of weeks. Chewy Customer
Picky eater approved
Hi, my dog has only been on this a week, but she loves it so far. Picky eater for sure was on a very good quality food and just stopped eating it. A friend told me to try this, so far so good. Transitioning over but at half and half, she loves it. I like the larger kibble, actually crunches it. Much cheaper locally, why is chewy so much more expensive? Chewy Customer
Negative
Five stars for Farmina in general, but
Wow, I can't believe I'm even saying this, because for me and I has been so good to my pets. I have some pets with serious food allergies and sensitivities. My Border Collie Mix who is a rescue and gets bored very easily with food. She is the reason I tried the Wild Boar one. I have heard that it is a very popular flavor and wanted to change it up. She refuses to eat it until she is famished. Again, in my opinion- Farmina is by far the best kibble on the market. Not sure if my dogs are just too fancy for this flavor haha. Happy to say that I was able to donate it to a local shelter, so that is good. Chewy Customer
